Christchurch Mansion, a Tudor brick mansion in Ipswich, has a rich history dating back over 500 years, originally built on the site of a 12th-century priory.
Origins and Construction
Christchurch Mansion is located in Christchurch Park, Ipswich, and was constructed around 1548-1550 by Edmund Withypoll, a wealthy merchant.
The site was originally home to the Holy Trinity Priory, founded in the 12th century, which was dissolved by King Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. After the dissolution, the estate was purchased by Paul Withypoll, Edmund's father, who laid the groundwork for the mansion's construction.
